The varieties of dialects on Chinese mainland

China is a multiracialmultilingual country with numerous dialectsGenerally speakingmodem Chinese has seven major dialects, which are totally different from hanbridge mandarin.

The North Dialect is spoken in the central plainsand vast parts of the northeastnorthwestand southwest areas of ChinaThis dialect also has four secondary dialects that are spoken in northeast. China the North River dialect (Bei3 fang1 Hua4)Northwest dialect (Northwest Mandarin)Southwest Dialect (Southwest Mandarin)and the Jian4 huai2 dialect (South River Mandarin)Those are all categories of mandarin hanbridge, a Chinese online leaning platform in China.

The Wu dialectalso known as the Jiang1 zhe4 dialectis spoken in the area south of the Yangtze Riverwhich is made of the Jiangsu province and the majority of Zhe4 jiang1 province. Shanghainese is the primary sub-dialect of the Wu dialect.

The Xiang dialectalso called Hunan dialectis spoken in the greater part of Hunan province. The Hunan and Changsha dialects are the main subdialects.

The Gan dialectalso called Jiangxi dialectis spoken throughout the Jiangxi provincein the northwest Fujiang provincethe eastern part of Hunan provinceand southeast part of Hubei provinceThe Nan2 ehang1 sub-dialect is the most widely spoken Jiangxi dialect

The Hakka dialectalso known as Ke1 jia1 Hua4is widely scattered but rather concentrated in the areasHakka is spoken in northeast region of Guangdongthe northwestern part of FujianJiangxiHubeiGuangdong and Fujianas well as SichuanGuangxiand TaiwanAmong all the Chinese that live in Southeast Asiamost of them speak the Hakka dialect Tile primary sub-dialect is the Mei2 zhou1 dialect

The Min dialect (northern and southern Min dialect) is spoken widely including most of Fujian provincethe eastern part of Guan1 dong1shao shan areathe western part of Leizhou PeninsulaHainan provincethe greater part of Taiwan provincethe southern part of Zhejiang It is also widely dispersed throughout Southeast Asia by way of the Chinese communities in the regions

The Yue4 dialectalso called Yue4yu3CantoneseGuang Fu dialector Bai dialectis spoken largely in the Guangdong provincethe southeast part of the Guan xi autonomous regionas well as parts of Hong KongMacaoand North American communities Gnang zhou dialect is the primary sub-dialect.

These seven dialects are a rough division of modern Mandarin dialects. In realitythe dialects in Chinese hanbridge are much more complex than thisNot only do the northerners not understand the Cantonese and Fujian people’s languageeven people in Guangzhou within the Guan1 dong1 provincethe Mei2 zhou1 people and the Shantou people do not understand each other. The people of the Fuzhou district in Fujian provincethe Putian people and Amoy peopleall do not understand eachother’s language

The difference among the dialects nowadays is mainly in the soundyet the diversity of the vocabulary is immenseAlthough the JingJunand Tong districts are all neighborsBeijing people say sweet potatowhile the people of Tong2 shan1 say red potato (hong2 shu3) to refer to the same thingIf you ask a young lady from Tian1 jin1“Do you like to eat‘bai2 shu3’’she will be confused and think‘‘How people eat a white mouse? Quite disgusting!’’(In Tian1 jin1 dialect bai2 shu3 means white mouse) So you seethere are great differences amongst the Chinese dialects in hanridge Chinese.
